After four successful Webinars and on popular demand we had the fifth and final webinar on Covid-19 - Where are we now ? on August 09, 2020. The panel of speakers were experts from the medical sector whose profiles are provided below. Thanks to Sri. Dr. Arun Chockalingam, “COVID 19 – Where are we now?”
Dr Chockalingam is passionate about global health research, particularly on non-communicable disease (NCD) prevention and control in low-and middle-income countries. Dr. Chockalingam was the Founding Director of Global Health at University of Toronto’s Dalla Lana School of Public Health, Founding Director of the Office of Global Health at US National Institutes of Health, Founding Director of Global Health at Simon Fraser University, Vancouver. Served at key executive positions at Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Health Canada and World Hypertension League. He has published over 180 papers, 11 book chapters and 2 books. Dr Chockalingam is a fellow of the American Heart Association (FAHA), the American College of Cardiology (FACC) and the International Academy of Cardiovascular Sciences (FIACS). He has also received many prestigious awards including the Canadian Deputy Minister of Health’s Recognition Award (1997), the Canadian Cardiovascular Society’s Harold Segal Award of Merit (1998), the Canadian Institute of Health Research President’s Recognition Award (2005), the Blood Pressure Canada’s George Fodor Award (2007), the Canadian Association of Physicians of Indian Heritage’s Medal of Honor (2007), and the Simon Dack Award from the Mount Sinai Medical Center, New York (2013). He is a recipient of Lifetime Achievement Award from the Canada India Network Society (2018).
Dr. Deborah Fuller "A Pound of Cure - Vaccine to stop Covid-19"
Dr. Fuller is a Professor in the Department of Microbiology at the University of Washington School of Medicine and Chief of the Infectious Diseases and Translational Medicine Division at the Washington National Primate Research Center. Prior to her academic career, Dr. Fuller worked in biotechnology developing novel vaccines against HIV and emerging infectious diseases. In 2004, she transitioned to academia where she continued her research developing novel nucleic acid vaccine platform technologies for the prevention and immunotherapy of infectious diseases and recently, developed a vaccine for COVID-19 that is scheduled to enter human clinical trials in Fall 2020. Dr. Fuller is a co-founder of a biotechnology company, Orlance, Inc (www.orlance.com) that aims to advance the most promising nucleic acid vaccines developed in her lab to clinical testing. She is a member of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Vaccines for Microbial Diseases (VMD) study section and is currently serving on the National Primate Research Centers Operations Leadership Group to accelerate preclinical evaluation of promising COVID-19 vaccines and antivirals nationwide. She has led the translation of two vaccines from bench to human clinical trials, authored over 80 manuscripts and is a co-inventor on over a dozen patents for vaccines and antivirals against infectious diseases.
Lavanya Krishnan “COVID 19 - Thriving Together, Today and Tomorrow”
Lavanya Krishnan has an M.S. in Exercise Science and a Masters in Public Health (Epidemiology) from the University at Buffalo. She has been involved in public health work for the Healthy World Foundation and NIDAN, India. She has helped implement preventive public health practices aimed at reducing incidence of communicable diseases in Goanpura, Bihar. As an exercise physiologist, Lavanya is currently involved in training seniors in the areas of strength training and cardiovascular exercise. Lavanya strongly believes in preventive care and encourages her clients to incorporate strength training as an essential part of their life. She aims to empower her clients with information rooted in the principles of public health and exercise science so that they can make sustainable choices that best suit their lifestyle. Lavanya will share some ideas on how we can get beyond just surviving this pandemic. She will address the importance of physical health and maintaining social connections so that we can thrive in this new reality.
